Manitoba Education has revised the K-8 math curriculum. Some of the changes, which will take effect September, 2013, are as follows:
- a requirement for memorization of times tables has been added,
- all four standard algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication and long division have been added,
- statements regarding the appropriate use of technology have been added.
We see this as a positive first step and will provide further comments on the changes soon.
To hear an interview regarding the changes, go to the CJOB Audio Vault, May 31, 2013, to hear Gerald Farthing, Deputy Minister of Education, interviewed at 6:17 and Anna Stokke interviewed at 19:48.
