The Manitoba Ministry of Education has recently revised its Mandate, Mission, Vision, Overarching Goals and Priority Action Areas webpage. The immediate predecessor of this page, made no direct mention of academics, being concerned entirely with the social and economic needs of target groups in society.  This version has added the following “Priority Action Area”:

1.   Numeracy and Literacy

WISE Math applauds the ministry for this step in the right direction. It is our view that Mathematical (Numeracy) and Language Arts (Literacy) skills are central to all academic pursuits. If this priority action area leads to practical solutions to existential needs in these domains then all Manitobans benefit.  We are committed to working with governments to find a way forward to improved math education across all western provinces.
